Required Skill:
The Designer shall be highly proficient in the development of three-dimensional CAD models of opto-
mechanical concepts and end items using ProE. The designer shall also be proficient in the development of
layout drawings of mechanical and opto-mechanical systems using ProE. The Designer shall perform routine
engineering analysis of complex systems (e.g., dimensional studies, such as tolerance stack-ups and
application of GD&T to designs; geometric studies, such as space claim/interference checks under static and
dynamic conditions; structural studies, such as W, CG, MMI and cross-sectional property determination;
hydraulic and electrical studies, such as tube/cable length determination).
The Designer shall be responsible for creating finalized parts, schematics, systems, and installations of varying
complexity from design criteria supplied by the Supervising Engineer. Designers are responsible for the
documentation of analyses, layouts, and designs up to and including final engineering drawings.
Other responsibilities include:
1. Check design models and drawings for adherence to the project model and drawings standards, and
compliance with MIL-Specs and/or customer requirements (e.g., compatibility between the model and drawing;
sufficiency of included views and dimensional detail to support manufacture; correctness of layout, layering
scheme, notes and callouts).
2. Identify and/or incorporate modifications necessary to correct deficiencies in design models and drawings.
3. Maintain configuration knowledge of assigned systems and ensure changes and modifications are
processed through the change control system.
4. Detect errors that, if undetected, may result in rework, lost time or lost material.
Must have the following:
- An Associate Degree, Specialized Training (in Engineering, Technology or an appropriate science), or
equivalent education with a minimum of seven years - Experience in design and drafting, to include three years.
- design experience, OR without an Associate Degree or Specialized Training, a minimum of eleven years
- experience in design and drafting required.
- Knowledge of concept development and/or product design required.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas through drawing required.
- Ability to concept and design hydraulic, electric, and mechanical systems required.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively
express thoughts (e.g., technical plans, concepts, designs, and recommended solutions) to others,
required.
